Visit here and sign the petition against a new development that is being pushed through, with upper level governmental support, in the Princess Alexandra Nature Reserve in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).
Basically, an artificial island is being created right across the channel from Little Water Cay (maybe 50 m away, if that) and adjacent to Mangrove Cay (i.e., on the same shallow shelf). Both of these islands, as well as nearby Donna, Bird, and Lizard Cays harbor important iguana populations that will be adversely affected by this development. The Mangrove Cay population, with over 1,000 iguanas, will likely be extirpated if this project is completed. All of these cays are part of the same land and sea park and officially protected... on paper anyway. Significant damage is being done to the marine environment also. This is only one of numerous developments currently proposed within TCI protected areas but because of its proximity to Provo its receiving the most attention and has catalyzed public opposition.
Glenn Gerber is also working to help form a coalition of various public and private stakeholders to oppose all development in TCI protected areas and have attached a mission statement for the coalition. If you belong to an organization that might be interested in lending support to this initiative please contact Dr. Gerber via email.
